Welcome to the Waterfront Museum. Our mission is to provide waterfront access, and promote historic preservation. We foster an understanding of the NY Harbor as a waterway carrying commerce and commuters as well as a means for culture and recreation. The museum received the Municipal Arts Society 2003 Certificate of Merit Award for making an exceptional contribution to the life of NYC and for an extraordinary job of bring the waterfront closer to all New Yorkers. The Barge was also designated by the United Nations as the "Regional Craft of the International Year of the Oceans" in 1998 for The Waterfront Museum's work in opening up waterfronts for the use and enjoyment of the general public.
The Waterfront Museum has joined with other preservation and maritime groups to form the "SAVE THE GRAVING DOCK" committee. It is the committee's goal to prevent Red Hook's functional graving dock from destruction. IKEA's current plan is to fill the valuable maritime resource that was used as recently as February 2005 with construction debris and create a parking lot. We ask that you consider becoming a sponsor and contribute to our maritime history preservation efforts. In addition to helping us recover financially from our Drydock Project, your support will ensure the preservation of this and other historic maritime resources. We invite you to contact us for information about our educational and other programs.

The Waterfront Museum has returned to its new homeport Pier 44 off Conover Street in Red Hook. Special thanks to Greg O'Connell for creating a wonderful walkway and garden and offering us the chance to build a great docking facility. The Museum is especially grateful to John Quadrozzi, Jr. of Gowanus Industrial Park, Inc. for temporarily offering us dock space in the Gowanus Bay during our critical time of need. View our Captain's Log for our latest news and updates.
