South Brooklyn Bicycle Tour |
Throughout the year the Gowanus Dredgers promote a bike tour to exploring a ten-mile section of the South Brooklyn shoreline. The tour focuses on issues affecting habitat and water quality. It also includes a description about area history, recent developments and introduces community resources along Brooklyn's shoreline.
The tour stops at community organizations where representatives inform the group about their efforts. The workshop highlights the variety of uses and environmental issues found on the waterfront.

Last stop on the Gowanus Canal

The tour heads south on Furman Street to Red Hook briefly highlighting the proposed greenway and features of the waterfront neighborhood of South Brooklyn. From Red Hook, the ride continues slowly up the banks of the Gowanus Canal exploring the hidden treasures of landmarks, bridges and dead end streets.
The riding pace is easy and slow around the Gowanus Canal. This is a perfect tour for beginners and all ages. The ride usually lasts for three hours. Bring a lunch or snack and some water. The tour will be cancelled if it is raining 30 minuites prior to departure and the ride is free ($10 donations accepted). Don't forget a helmet, sunscreen and camera for the interesting sights and spectacular views. |

The tour follows the shoreline from the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood, through Red Hook and along the Gowanus Canal
